October Home Checklist: 15-Minute Tasks That

Save $$$ All Winter

A little prep now = lower bills, fewer repairs, and a cozier home when temps drop. Each item below takes about 15 minutes (or less) and pays you back all season.

HVAC & Air Quality

  • Swap Furnace/Return Filters – Fresh filters keep airflow strong and cut energy use. (Set a phone reminder for every 30–60 days.)

  • Vacuum Floor & Return Vents – Dust restricts airflow; a quick pass with the brush attachment helps.

  • Set Your Thermostat – Program weekday/weekend schedules; nudge 1–2° and save without feeling it.

Smart Heat Moves

  • Reverse Ceiling Fans (Clockwise, Low) – Pushes warm air down without a draft.

  • Bleed Radiators (Hot-Water Systems) – Release trapped air so radiators heat evenly. Keep a towel and cup handy.

  • Check Boiler/Heater Sight Glass/Pressure – Quick visual; call a pro if levels look off.

Water & Freeze Prevention

  • Drain & Disconnect Garden Hoses – Store them; install outdoor faucet covers to prevent burst pipes.

  • Test Sump Pump (If You Have One) – Pour water into the pit; confirm it kicks on and discharges.

Weatherproofing & Draft Control

  • Inspect Weatherstripping – Close a sheet of paper in your door; if it slides out easily, replace the strip.

  • Caulk Small Gaps – Hit window/door trim cracks with paintable caulk; stops drafts and moisture.

  • Close/Lock Windows – Locks pull sashes tight against seals (surprising heat saver).

Gutters, Roofline & Exterior

  • Clean Gutter Debris At Downspouts – Scoop by the outlets so water can escape (full clean can be later or hire out).

  • Check Splash Blocks/Downspout Extensions – Aim water 4–6 ft away from the foundation.

Safety Check (Do This Today)

  • Test Smoke & CO Detectors – Press the button; replace any 9V batteries. Replace detectors older than 10 years (CO: 5–7 years).

  • Check Fire Extinguisher Gauges – Needle in the green? Good. Know where each one lives.

Laundry & Kitchen Efficiency

  • Clean Dryer Lint Trap & Exterior Flap – Faster dry times = lower bills and reduced fire risk.

  • Vacuum Fridge Toe-Kick/Coils (Front) – A quick pass improves efficiency (full coil clean can be a longer task).

Five Power Minutes Before The First Frost

  1. Flip fans to clockwise.

  2. Replace the furnace filter.

  3. Test smoke/CO detectors.

  4. Disconnect hoses + cover spigots.

  5. Clear gutter outlets.
